POSITION of the Republican Alternative (REAL) Party regarding the Declaration on allied interaction between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan
The Declaration signed by presidents Ilham Aliyev and Vladimir Putin in Moscow on 22 February 2022 does not correspond to the negative expectations that we and the society had on the eve of the presidents’ meeting.
If there is not any kind of verbal or secret written agreement behind the Declaration, then the correct application of its letter and spirit will strengthen possibilities for stable continuation of relations between Azerbaijan and Russia on the basis of independence, state sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of the borders of our country, non-interference in its internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit of the two countries, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-use of force or threat of force, and international law and its norms.
Wide thematic scope of the document reflects the tradition of public diplomacy inherent in our region and does not impose excessive or inappropriate obligations on Azerbaijan.
Origins of the Declaration are connected to the tension, which has recently assumed a protracted character, in the Eastern European space to which Azerbaijan belongs. From this point of view, the document gives Azerbaijan an opportunity not to be part of this tension, thus allowing us to focus on the post-conflict tasks facing our country.
The declaration exists in the context of Shusha Declaration, signed by Turkey and Azerbaijan last year and approved by the Milli Majlis many months later, as well as of the document, now pending signing, which is to define foundations of the future long-term cooperation between Azerbaijan and European Union.
The Republican Alternative Party will decide how to vote on this Declaration in Parliament by taking into account all the above factors as well as the regional and bilateral political dynamics that will be observed from now on.
